This vintage had experienced an unusually long, 6-day fermentation; the resulting spirit when barreled was matured in the same warehouse location, near a window and close to a heat cycling duct, exposing the barrels to very high temperatures. This maturation resulted in extremely robust and intense wood-derived characteristics.

Since 2002, each year Old Forester has released a limited edition, 12 year-old bourbon on September 2nd, the birthday of founder George Garvin Brown, this one vintage dated June 13, 2003. What distinguishes this release from others is that all the barrels were selected from the same part of the warehouse (instead of selections from a range of locations), near the windows and a heat duct, exposing the whiskey to higher temperatures and concentration of wood influences.
Old Forester 2014 Birthday Bourbon Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Tasting Notes
Nose: Caramel, vanilla, milk chocolate, maple, and weirdly enough fresh straw scents are all present up front. It’s really a fantastic nose that makes you want to linger on it for a while before tasting the bourbon.
Palate: A rich and creamy mouthfeel with predominant notes of burnt sugar, vanilla, allspice, and a hint of butterscotch.
Finish: The heat lingers for a few moments before it fading away to flavors of old wood, vanilla frosting, and a long lasting taste of lightly toasted sugar.
