Part of Jefferson's superb Presidential Select series, this is an impressive 21-year-old Kentucky straight rye whisky, sourced from a distillery that has not been named. 21 years of maturation is rather a long time for rye, and this one has no shame in showing off its age.

Tasting Notes

Nose: As it opens up, darker notes emerge and the nose relaxes into subtle clove and anise.

Palate: A very pleasant first act after a sweet introduction. This whiskey drinks a little hotter than you’d expect at 90.4 proof, but it’s not aggressive. The sweetness of the nose doesn’t follow to the palate, and the caramel is almost lost, but that isn’t necessarily not to be expected. The mouthfeel is a little thin and dry. Toasted oak notes hang out with hints of black cherry.

Finish: Rich and dry.

Distillery Information

Founded in 1997, Jefferson’s is the brainchild of Trey Zoeller and his father Chet, a famed bourbon historian. They were continuing a family tradition that goes back to Trey’s 8th generation grandmother who was arrested in 1799 for the “production and sales of spirituous liquors.” To personify the brand, they chose Thomas Jefferson—known for his curiosity and experimental spirit. This is a mindset to which Trey has dedicated himself, pushing the boundaries of the definition of bourbon. Upholding tradition, yet always discovering new possibilities.
