Elijah Craig was named for a reverend who lived in Virginia. He kept a warehouse where he stored barrels and one day experienced a devastating fire. He used the charred casks regardless and found they imparted a lovely character. This is a great 12 year old small batch bourbon, named in his honour. Produced by Heaven Hill and named after the disputed inventor of Bourbon Rev. Elijah Craig; he put his whiskey into barrels that had been charred in a fire. This is a small-batch bourbon (in this case, it is made from 100 or fewer barrels) and has a traditional bourbon mash-bill (one with 70-80% corn and remainder rye and barley). Note: As of Jan 2016, this product has been discontinued and replaced with a no-age statement Small Batch bottling.
Elijah Craig 12 Year Old Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey Tasting Notes
Nose: Quite thick and full. There is a beautiful sweetness with notes of toasty oak, toffee, spicy stewed fruits, a touch of resin and a lovely crème anglaise character.
Palate: Full and sublimely smooth with notes of stewed Bramley apples, malmsey, a touch of aniseed and a hint of spice.
Finish: Good length with toasty oak notes and a creamy sweetness.
