Distillery Information
Captain Morgan is a brand of rum named after the 17th-Century Welsh privateer Sir Henry Morgan. It was established in 1944 by Seagram after they bought the Long Pond distillery from the Jamaican government, and subsequently the rights to a spiced rum recipe produced by a nearby pharmacy. In 2001 the brand was sold to Diageo, though from the 1980s through to 2012, Destilería Serrallés of Puerto Rico had the rights to produce and sell the brand in their home market and the rest of the Caribbean. In 2012, Diageo transferred production of Captain Morgan to the US Virgin Islands. The original Long Pond site is now part of National Rums of Jamaica (NRJ) grouping. It was closed for major maintenance work in 2012 and although reopened, was ravaged by a fire in 2018. Captain Morgan's Original Spiced Rum is the most widely distributed product under the brand. It is distilled from sugar cane in a continuous still, then aged in oak for a year before the addition of flavors and Caribbean spices. Numerous other variants are available with diverse styles, flavorings and countries of origin within the Caribbean. The precise line-up in each market region can vary.
